Alt Text Intelligence creates editable alt text from photos on iPhone, iPad, Android, and the web. The native apps offer local and cloud descriptions. The web tool uses a private server and does not require an account.

Common questions

How does the web tool handle my image?

Choosing, dropping, or pasting an image at dr.eamer.dev/alt/ sends it securely through api.dr.eamer.dev to an external description service and starts the description immediately. This site does not retain images or use them for training.

The web tool supports batches of up to 10 JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, HEIC, or HEIF images. It processes two at a time and provides up to 10 descriptions per browser per UTC day. You can select each result to edit, copy, share, post, or download a tagged image.

What accessibility options does the web tool provide?

Atkinson Hyperlegible Next is the default font. Open Settings to change text size, use your device font, switch between dark and light colors, add letter and word spacing, or reduce motion. The page also respects system high-contrast/forced-color, reduced-motion, and reduced-transparency preferences and supports keyboard navigation and visible focus.

How do I post from the web tool?

Under Description detail, choose Bluesky and sign in with your handle and a Bluesky password. An app password (Bluesky Settings → App passwords) works the same and is easy to revoke later. The password goes directly to Bluesky and the site does not store it; the session stays in your browser until you log out.

Under Description detail, choose Mastodon and enter your server, such as mastodon.social. You will sign in on that server and return to the web tool. Mastodon uses OAuth, so the web tool never receives your Mastodon password. The access token stays in your browser until you disconnect.

Why does the app ask before describing my photo?

This confirmation applies to the native app. When cloud descriptions remain, the primary Alt Text screen offers cloud description and asks for confirmation before upload. The confirmation explains that the photo will be sent to a server for analysis. Choose Use On-Device to keep it local, or Cancel to stop. The web tool starts processing immediately when you choose, drop, or paste an image.

Can I use the app without cloud description?

Yes. On-device description remains available when you decline cloud processing, have no connection, encounter a cloud error, or use the daily quota. Extensions and Shortcuts always use the local pipeline.

Why did I receive a rules-based write-up?

The app keeps a deterministic Vision-based composer available on supported iOS 17 and later devices. It uses grounded cues such as recognized text and classifications. When the system language model is unavailable, downloading, busy, or unsupported, the rules-based composer provides the fallback.

Where are my saved descriptions?

Completed write-ups appear in the History tab and remain on the device. Tap Redo to reopen the saved image on the Alt Text tab. Use the History menu to export describe items as JSON or clear History.

How do I publish to a social account?

Open Settings, choose Accounts under Social Publishing, and connect a supported service. After creating or editing alt text, tap Publish and select the destination. The app publishes only after you finish that action.

How do diagnostics work?

Help improve the app is optional and off by default. When enabled, error reports remain local unless you tap Send report by email and send the message.

Can I use Alt Text Intelligence from another app?

Yes. Share a photo to Alt Text Intelligence, use the Photos action extension, run Describe an Image from Shortcuts, or open the app from its widget or Control Center control.
